What is a work hours calculator?
Gross time becomes net time
8.0h gross− 0.5h break= 7.5h net
A work hours calculator is a free online tool that computes your total daily or weekly net work hours — the actual paid time after subtracting unpaid breaks from your gross shift length. Often called a clock in clock out calculator, shift hours calculator, or time card calculator, it replaces manual math with instant, accurate results for any schedule.
Enter your start time, end time, and break deduction to see total hours in decimal format (e.g., 7 h 30 min = 7.50). The calculator also estimates gross amounts when you enter a rate and optional threshold. For weekly totals, use the timesheet calculator; for simple rate conversion, check the hourly rate calculator.

How Work Hours Are Calculated
The universal formula behind every calculator on this site
Watch hours flow through the calculation
In This Section
Net Work Hours = End Time − Start Time − Unpaid Breaks
- Record your clock-in time (e.g., 9:00 AM)
- Record your clock-out time (e.g., 5:30 PM)
- Subtract start from end: 5:30 PM − 9:00 AM = 8.5 gross hours
- Subtract unpaid breaks: 8.5 − 0.5 (30-min lunch) = 8.0 net work hours
This four-step process applies whether you use a time card calculator, a digital timesheet app, or this free online tool. The same formula works for overnight shifts — if your end time is earlier than your start time, the calculator adds 24 hours automatically.
Converting to Decimal Hours
Decimal hours are useful for spreadsheets and timesheets. Divide remaining minutes by 60: 7 hours 45 minutes = 7.75 decimal hours. Use our time duration calculator to convert any time span instantly.
Weekly & Monthly Totals
Add each day's net hours together for a weekly total. Our timesheet calculator does this automatically across 5–7 days. For monthly estimates, multiply weekly hours by the number of working weeks (typically 4.33).
Extra-Hour Estimate
To create an extra-hour estimate, enter the threshold and multiplier you want to use. The calculator separates hours above that threshold and applies your selected multiplier.
