What is a time duration calculator?
A time duration calculator computes the exact elapsed time between any two clock times. It outputs results in hours, minutes, total minutes, and decimal hours โ the format most payroll systems require. It also handles overnight shifts that cross midnight.
The Duration Formula
Duration = End Time โ Start Time
For overnight: Duration = (24:00 โ Start Time) + End Time
Example Calculation
8:30 AM to 5:45 PM = 9 hours 15 minutes = 555 total minutes = 9.25 decimal hours. Enter an hourly rate to estimate gross pay from the same duration.
Working Together Example
If one person can finish a job in 2 hours and another can finish it in 1.5 hours, their combined rate is 1/2 + 1/1.5 = 7/6 jobs per hour. The time together is 1 รท 7/6 = 6/7 hour, or about 51 minutes 26 seconds.
Common Use Cases
- Shift planning: Checking the exact length of a newly scheduled shift.
- Overnight work: Using the "crosses midnight" feature to calculate graveyard shift hours.
- Task tracking: Freelancers logging start and end times for specific administrative tasks before adding them to a timesheet.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Forgetting AM/PM: 9:00 AM to 9:00 AM is 0 hours (or 24 overnight), while 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM is 12 hours.
- Adding breaks: This tool measures raw elapsed time. If you took a 30-minute break, you must manually deduct it or use the work hours calculator instead.
